Notified Body is a conformity assessment body that has been officially designated by the respective national authorities to carry out the conformity assessment procedures pursuant to the applicable Union harmonization legislation when third party intervention is required.

For some Directives, the European Union has considered that the manufacturer may have the possibility to contact a third party for the evaluation of its technical files. In some cases, European Directives require the mandatory intervention of a Notified Body.

The designation of a Notified Body takes place in two phases:

In the first, the National Accreditation Body (in Italy, Accredia) accredits the institution through a harmonized reference standard (in Italy EN 17065).

In the second, the National Authorities authorizes the Body and notifies the European Commission of the name.
